The award of a 2017 ICE Mini-Grant afforded me the opportunity to purchase equipment in order to explore the use of Virtual Reality with my high school students who have special needs. My students have significant cognitive disabilities including communication needs. This presentation will highlight our journey in the classroom where we are developing the use of Virtual Reality tools alongside adapted US History content to further enhance the student experience. Seven students, two peer assistants, and two teacher assistants have been working together to learn the best methods, apps, and content to expand educational goals and outcomes. I have been supported by our Instructional Technology Coordinator, Lisa Lichtman, our District’s Instructional Coaching program and many colleagues. In addition, other technology strategies will be highlighted which are used to promote independence and communication.
